چکیده

Multiphoton microscopy is a recent non-invasive skin imaging technique that allows the human skin three-dimensional structure to be characterized in vivo with sub-μm resolution. This technique, in combination with specific 3D image processing tools, allows an automatic segmentation of the different skin layers and an extraction of several quantitative parameters characterizing skin in terms of morphology, density and organization. In this paper, we propose a new specific 3D melanin detection and quantification method based on multiphoton microscopy and fluorescence lifetime imaging, compatible with in vivo human skin investigations. We applied this specific melanin analysis method in two clinical trials: i) 15 young (18-25y) and 15 aged (70-75y) human female volunteers focusing on the ventral and dorsal sides (unexposed vs. exposed) of their forearm, and ii) 45 female volunteers (1855y) with different skin phototypes (ITA values of their ventral forearm ranging from grade I to V). Our specific 3D melanin quantification method allowed us to bring out age related melanin changes between the ventral and dorsal sides of the forearm and discriminate the different skin phototypes. This innovative approach could have large applications in both the dermatological and cosmetic fields, since easily applied to the characterization of pigmentation disorders or to the assessment of compounds able to modulate skin melanin content.

In vivo measurements of cutaneous melanin across spatial scales: using multiphoton microscopy and spatial frequency domain spectroscopy.

The combined use of nonlinear optical microscopy and broadband reflectance techniques to assess melanin concentration and distribution thickness in vivo over the full range of Fitzpatrick skin types is presented. Twelve patients were measured using multiphoton microscopy (MPM) and spatial frequency domain spectroscopy (SFDS) on both dorsal forearm and volar arm, which are generally sun-exposed ...

In vivo multiphoton imaging of human skin: assessment of topical corticosteroid-induced epidermis atrophy and depigmentation.

Multiphoton microscopy has emerged in the past decade as a promising tool for noninvasive skin imaging. Our aim was to evaluate the potential of multiphoton microscopy to detect topical corticosteroids side effects within the epidermis and to provide new insights into their dynamics. Healthy volunteers were topically treated with clobetasol propionate on a small region of their forearms under o...

The Combinational Use Of Knowledge-Based Methods and Morphological Image Processing in Color Image Face Detection

The human facial recognition is the base for all facial processing systems. In this work a basicmethod is presented for the reduction of detection time in fixed image with different color levels. The proposed method is the simplest approach in face spatial localization, since it doesn’trequire the dynamics of images and information of the color of skin in image background. Inaddition, to do face...

Ultra-Fast Image Reconstruction of Tomosynthesis Mammography Using GPU

Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) is a technology that creates three dimensional (3D) images of breast tissue. Tomosynthesis mammography detects lesions that are not detectable with other imaging systems. If image reconstruction time is in the order of seconds, we can use Tomosynthesis systems to perform Tomosynthesis-guided Interventional procedures. This research has been designed to study u...
